Acupressure PDF  | Print |

Acupressure uses acupuncture points on the body and applies a series of techniques to stimulate the points and affect positive change to minimise patient symptoms.

Because it is non-invasive and easily learned and practiced by anyone, it can give individuals a better sense of taking control over symptoms as well as gaining relief without dependency on acupuncture treatments.

A range of techniques are available including: pressing, kneading, rubbing, pushing, grasping and tapping.

Basic guidelines when practising acupressure include:

1. Be guided by your acupuncturist on what points to use. Certain points are contra-indicated, particularly if the person is pregnant or has high blood pressure.

2. Never apply acupressure to bruised, inflamed or broken skin. Similarly, do not use acupressure directly on cuts and scrapes or veins.

3. Do not use acupressure when under the influence of alcohol or non-medicinal drugs.

4. Strong pressure should not be used if a person is extremely weak or tired.
